TAZAAR Introduces New GeoTag Retrofit Solution

TAZAAR has introduced GeoTag Retrofit, a new product family designed specifically to provide real-time asset visibility and enhanced protection for professional AV equipment. Developed in collaboration with rental companies, the first GeoTag Retrofit solution has been created for the widely deployed Pioneer CDJ-3000 professional DJ multiplayer.

The project originated from a request by Blue River Audio, which sought a more effective way to monitor the location and movement of its CDJ-3000 inventory. Working closely with the rental company, TAZAAR developed a bespoke version of its GeoTag technology that integrates directly within the player while remaining entirely self-contained.

“This project started with a request from Blue River Audio, who wanted to have a better understanding of where their CDJ-3000s were,” recalls Lisa Stafford, CEO of TAZAAR. “They shared one of their rental units with us so we could find a way to retrofit GeoTag into this vital piece of DJ gear.”

The resulting GeoTag Retrofit combines independent GPS tracking with its own network connectivity, eliminating any reliance on nearby smartphones or external infrastructure. Beyond simple location monitoring, the system also maintains a complete location history, enabling users to track equipment movements from warehouse to venue and back again. This provides rental companies with a detailed route log rather than simply identifying the last known position of an asset.

Among the most significant features for rental providers is the platform’s geofencing capability, which allows operators to define approved operating areas and receive alerts whenever equipment moves beyond predetermined boundaries.

“We loved the geofencing capabilities that GeoTag Retrofit has given us,” notes Tim James from Blue River Audio. “We know exactly where the equipment is supposed to be on every site we work, and using GeoTag we can set up alerts if our gear moves outside the area it is supposed to be in. It has given us a complete understanding of where our equipment is.”

The launch addresses a particularly relevant challenge for companies supplying DJ equipment. The Pioneer CDJ-3000 has become an industry-standard fixture in professional DJ setups worldwide, but its compact size and portability can also make it an attractive target for theft. While replacement costs can be significant, many rental companies are reluctant to absorb increased insurance premiums resulting from theft claims. GeoTag Retrofit is intended to offer an additional layer of protection and improve the likelihood of recovering equipment should it go missing.

Following the initial deployment with Blue River Audio, a growing number of rental providers have adopted the technology to safeguard their fleets. Among them is BigFishSRL, which reports tangible operational benefits from the solution.

“GeoTag Retrofit has given us real peace of mind that the equipment we hire out is safe,” explains Steve Hubbard from BigFish. “The CDJ-3000 is very portable and something we have seen actively getting attention on site. GeoTag Retrofit has given us confidence that the gear is protected, and if anything ends up somewhere it shouldn’t, we’ll always be able to find it.”

According to TAZAAR, the positive response from the rental community has highlighted broader demand for integrated asset-tracking solutions across a wider range of professional equipment categories. The company has already confirmed that the next addition to the GeoTag Retrofit family is expected to target mixing consoles, with further details scheduled to be announced later this year.

“We are seeing requests from the industry to help businesses protect all sorts of gear,” concludes Stafford. “We are always happy to work with rental companies to find a solution that will support them as we expand our GeoTag Retrofit family. We’re also actively working directly with manufacturers to help them to integrate GeoTag technology in their products from the outset. Every new request helps to ensure businesses can protect their investments and get the most out of the equipment they own.”
