Christie Projection Technology Illuminates Ujjain’s Immersive Rudra Sagar Spectacle

INDIA: Christie RGB pure laser and 1DLP laser projectors are powering the visual experiences behind the Rudra Sagar light and sound shows in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, where large-scale projection mapping, water-screen imagery and architectural illumination combine to create one of India’s most ambitious outdoor multimedia installations.

Conceived and executed by CS Direkt Events & Exhibitions Pvt. Ltd., the installation has been designed as both a multimedia attraction and a devotional experience, using immersive visual storytelling to deepen visitors’ engagement while preserving the sanctity of one of India’s most revered religious sites.

At the heart of the installation, three Christie Griffyn 4K50-RGB pure laser projectors deliver panoramic visuals across three synchronised water screens spanning nearly 90 metres on the sacred Rudra Sagar Lake. Configured for long-throw projection across a fountain stretch approaching 100 metres, the system creates a seamless visual canvas for the water-screen mapping experience.

Projection technology also plays a central role within the Mahakal Lok Corridor, where two Griffyn 4K35-RGB projectors display imagery onto a retractable screen at the Lotus Pond, while three Christie 4K22-HS 1DLP laser projectors illuminate the site’s 10-metre-high statue of Lord Shiva. Combined with choreographed fountains, lighting, audio and cinematic content, the system delivers a fully synchronised immersive experience.

“The visual component of this project demanded exceptional brightness, precision, and reliability in a highly challenging outdoor setting,” said Sanjeev Pasricha, Group CEO of CS Direkt. “The Christie Griffyn and HS Series projectors gave us the performance and flexibility needed to create panoramic imagery across the water screens and at the Lotus Pond, while maintaining dependable performance in difficult site conditions.”

Delivering the installation required overcoming significant technical challenges, including long projection distances, extreme temperatures, dust, humidity, fluctuating water levels and strict heritage preservation requirements that prohibited permanent infrastructure. To meet these constraints, the Griffyn 4K50-RGB projectors were installed on specially engineered floating weatherproof platforms housed within customised environmental enclosures designed for reliable day-to-day operation.

Pasricha added that the projection systems were fully integrated with programmable fountains and centralised show control, enabling frame-accurate synchronisation across the entire production. “With no permanent mounting infrastructure permitted due to heritage preservation regulations, the floating platforms and custom housings were essential to achieving technical performance, minimal visual intrusion, and ensuring long-term dependability.”

Commenting on the project, Rishubh Nayar, ProAV Sales Director for India at Christie, said, “The Rudra Sagar project is a strong example of how our Griffyn and HS Series projectors perform in ambitious outdoor projection mapping applications. Their high brightness, 4K image quality, omnidirectional operation, and built-in warping and blending tools make them exceptionally well suited for complex large-format installations where image fidelity and operational stability are critical.”

Since its launch, the Rudra Sagar water-screen mapping experience has attracted more than 20 million visitors, demonstrating how advanced projection technology can transform large-scale heritage destinations through immersive storytelling while respecting the cultural significance of the site.
