ROE Visual CB5 Panels Illuminate Bangarra’s ‘Illume’ with Cultural Depth and Digital Vision

ROE Visual’s Carbon CB5 LED panels took centre stage as a dynamic visual canvas for Illume, the latest production by Australia’s acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre. Marking the company’s first theatre-based performance to incorporate an LED wall, the panels were supplied by Novatech Creative Event Technology.

Commenting on partnership with Bangarra, Novatech’s Managing Director, Leko Novakovic shared, “Partnering with Bangarra underscores our commitment to supporting the arts, particularly where innovation is concerned. This is Bangarra’s first production using the possibilities of LED technology and the results have been outstanding.”

Illume represents Bangarra’s inaugural collaboration with First Nations Visual Artist Darrell Sibosado and unfolds as a visually arresting exploration of light — both as a spiritual symbol and a commentary on light pollution amid the climate crisis. Leveraging the Carbon series’ visual capabilities, the creative team achieved a layered digital narrative designed to seamlessly interweave dance, storytelling, and contemporary video art.

As Frances Rings, Director and Choreographer of Illume noted “The screen gave an otherworldly glow and helped create a world that was timeless. I loved that it was very futuristic and allowed us to explore a totally new way of telling our stories at Bangarra.”

Lighting design for the production was helmed by Damien Cooper, with Video Design by Craig Wilkinson. The CB5 screen enabled the team to match the physical presence of performers with an immersive digital environment, helping bring Indigenous stories to life with atmospheric intensity and depth.

Bangarra’s Production Manager Cat Studley praised the visual integration, noting, “The LED screen could cover everything we needed artistically, bringing even more ideas to life. It was the best way to go.”
