SHURE Invests in EDGE Sound Research to Advance the Future of Experiential Audio

GLOBAL: In a strategic move that underscores its commitment to next-generation audio innovation, SHURE has announced a minority investment in EDGE Sound Research, a fast-emerging start-up focused on redefining how audiences experience sound across entertainment platforms.

Founded in 2019 by University of California, Riverside students Ethan Castro and Valtteri Salomaki, EDGE Sound Research has rapidly established itself as a pioneering force in experiential audio. Castro, a hard-of-hearing music producer and engineer, drew from personal experience to reimagine how sound can be perceived and felt, while Salomaki’s expertise in information systems and marketing strategy has helped shape the company’s forward-looking approach to audience engagement.

The collaboration between Shure and EDGE Sound Research is already delivering tangible innovation. At the centre of this partnership is the Shure DCA901 — an array microphone purpose-built for broadcast — paired with EDGE’s Virtual Sound Engine. Together, the technologies are transforming how live sports are experienced at home, enabling audiences to hear events with a level of presence previously reserved for premium in-venue seating.

The Virtual Sound Engine processes the detailed audio captured by the DCA901, intelligently analysing and isolating key sound objects that define emotion, pace and connection within a live event. The result is a more immersive and participatory listening experience, effectively shifting audiences from passive viewers to active participants.

“Through this partnership, Shure aims to leverage EDGE Sound Research’s groundbreaking developments to further its mission of delivering exceptional audio quality and innovation,” said Chris Schyvinck, President and CEO of SHURE. “By combining Shure’s 100-plus years of expertise and market presence with EDGE Sound Research’s breakthrough technologies, this collaboration aligns perfectly with Shure’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of audio technology and creating extraordinary listening experiences.”

The implications of this collaboration extend across the entire sports and broadcast ecosystem. For sports leagues, enhanced audio formats offer new ways to strengthen media rights value and deepen global fan engagement. Broadcasters gain access to premium audio experiences that can differentiate subscription tiers while unlocking new monetisation opportunities through alternate mixes and specialised content. Teams and venues can elevate premium spaces into immersive storytelling environments, while fans benefit from richer, more authentic audio that captures everything from on-field communication to crowd energy with unprecedented clarity.

EDGE Sound Research’s technologies are already being explored by major organisations including the NBA, MLS and the U.S. Tennis Association, with early deployments demonstrating the potential to reshape how live content is consumed.

“We’re excited to be partnering with such an established audio leader like Shure,” said Valtteri Salomaki, Co-Founder and CEO of EDGE Sound Research. “The most iconic moments in history have been captured by Shure microphones, and we’re thrilled about the possibilities of creating the new generation of sound experiences.”
