This week I had an interesting chat with a lighting programmer from the industry. He was involved in a project where the client was sold an idea by a consultant to create an interesting feature that is meant to be an attraction on its own accord. The idea was to have different symbols as part of a light and sound show. The problem began when the programmer was shown the symbols and realised that this was going to take a lot more effort and time. The programmer had mentioned sometimes it is easy to come up with ideas but it is also important to know the limitations of the solutions to be able to meet those ideas.
Interestingly, a Systems Integrator I met had a similar issue where the client did not quite know what they wanted and when the SI proposed the solution, they gave the green light only to have issues once the solution was implemented. It goes without saying that if someone is proposing an idea they must make sure the solutions are able to turn the ideas into realities and for the SI aspect, clients really need to understand their needs well before engaging a professional to do the job. More importantly they need to know if their request are reasonable and can be met by the technology employed.
