I doubt it was co-incidence that the Culture Academy Singapore in partnership with the University of Melbourne, Australia had organised “The Digital in Cultural Spaces” on the 7th and 8th of December which was prior to the official re-opening of the National Museum’s Glass Rotunda that features an immersive large-scale Digital Art installation experience. The event was a presentation cum panel discussion about how cultural institutions can remain relevant in a digitally connected world.
Digital does play a critical role in Archiving but it also does bring alive museum experiences when used appropriately. It does not and should not replace the physical visit to a museum. Instead digital should be used to encourage potential visitors and complement what is on exhibit. The Glass Rotunda is a perfect example of digital technology and analogue experience coming together effectively for visitors.
