The Bangalore Open Air (BOA) which is undoubtedly India’s Largest Metal Festival ran its fifth edition this year on the 9th July 2016 at the Royal Orchid Resorts on the outskirts of Bangalore.

The BOA is the Indian licensee of the Wacken Open Air, which happens to be amongst the biggest metal festivals in the world. Conceptualized and promoted by Infinite Dreams, the festival draws die hard metal fans from not only the country but from neighboring countries as well.

J Davis Prosound & Lighting having been onboard for last 3 open-air concerts of BOA was entrusted with Sound, Lights & Roof Trussing for the 4th year.

A L-Acoustics K2 rig was used for the first time at the BOA, having earlier used the L-Acoustics V-DOSC on previous editions.

Keeping with the ethos of the international edition where technical production is always given top priority, Nikhil Pai, the tech director and FoH engineer for most bands of the Indian edition this year entrusted the responsibilities of the technical production to J Davis Prosound, Bangalore.

“I have always used the services of J. Davis Prosound for this festival as they have an extremely efficient crew and great gear to go with it,” said Nikhil Pai.

J Davis Prosound employed 24 L’ Acoustics K2 line array elements for this year’s edition supplemented by 12 SB 28 Subwoofers in a cardioid delayed arc pattern.

“I needed a system that had enough headroom with even coverage while still being loud and clear to cover the full outdoor venue and J Davis Prosound did a fantastic job of the system design.”

Systems were designed and aligned by Bharath Patil from J. Davis Prosound.

Some of the other speakers deployed also belonged to the L’ Acoustics family with DV-Dosc elements also being used for front fills and side fills. Monitoring was via Martin Audio LE 1500 series stage monitors.

An equally impressive lighting rig consisted of 48 Par 64’s, 16 Elation Platinum Beam 5R, 16 Silver Star Cyan 8000 XE, 12 Atomic Strobes 3000, 03 Look Haze Machines, 06 4 Lite Molefays. Control was via a Pearl Avolites Console with LSC DMX Splitters.

The artist lineup this year comprised of Vader, the renowned Polish death metal band, Skull Fist from Canada, Nader Sadek for Egypt/ America, Inner Sanctum from Bangalore and Providence from Mumbai.

“I am extremely delighted with how the technical production went off this year and so are the bands and the visiting engineers. I have personally been inundated with emails and messages on how good the system sounded and how flawlessly the changeover’s were managed,” said Nikhil Pai.

Also helping tirelessly with the changeover’s and stage management were interns from the Audio Academy, a sound engineering college based out of Bangalore.

“I cannot be happier with the team I had this year and it is naturally a no-brainer for me to continue with the same alliances for the future editions of the Bangalore Open Air,” said Nikhil Pai.
